  • Verdict: Two stars out of five. While the original Evil Dead is hailed as one of the greatest horror movies ever, this version is but a pale shadow of the original. It's little more than another commonplace slasher flick.

  • Verdict: Four stars out of five. This is a very different Iron Man movie from its predecessors, with some bold and risky moves. There are strong performances all round from Robert Downey Jr, Gwyneth Paltrow, Ben Kingsley and Guy Pearce. The surprise twist in the middle will surprise and disappoint in equal measure.

  • Come Play The Game of Thrones, Robb

Wanted: one Robb Stark lookalike to um, play a Game of Thrones with one Daenerys Targaryen. Must be as buff and dashing as the real deal, and be dressed in battle-stained furs. • Verdict: Four walkers out of five. It had all been steadily building up to this, and The Walking Dead Season 3 finale didn't disappoint with a gut-wrenching, violent and yet hopeful conclusion. But the quality of the storytelling has been on a gradual slide since Season 1, and it's unclear where the show goes from here, especially with showrunner Glen Mazzara gone.

  • Verdict: 3.5 stars out of five. The revenge fantasy never seems to get old for Quentin Tarantino, but he finds new and original ways to work out what must be a mountain of anger issues. Unstinting on the bloodshed as ever, Django Unchained is a powerful tale with a more tender core this time: a moving love story.

  • Verdict: Three out of five stars. Nicholas Hoult carries the movie with a moving and often hilarious performance in this sweet, subversive zombie tale. Hoult also shares a tender chemistry with Teresa Palmer, while John Malkovich brings gravitas to proceedings. A pity then, about the sizable plot holes and the in-your-face metaphors. Still, more than worth the entrance fee.

  • As of 10am Pacific Time, the second Comic Con International hotel lottery has closed, and choices for Comic Con 2013 hotels have gotten that much fewer. So allow me to tell you about the place I'm staying this year, one you may also want to consider. It's the same place I stayed during last year's San Diego Comic Convention (SDCC) : the quaint, lovely Keating House Bed and Breakfast on Banker's Hill.
